is a mixed practice located in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Companion animals (mostly dogs and cats) comprise about 70% of our practice, with the remaining 30% split between various farm animals. Although the bulk of our large animal practice is horses, we do see a fair number of llamas, sheep, goats, a few pot-bellied pigs and several dairy and beef herds.
One of the major strong points of this practice is the interesting (and challenging) variety of patients that we see in this "mixed animal" environment. Since we are a small practice, our staff members must possess the flexibility to adapt to the situation and be able to work as a team. We generally have one veterinarian and two veterinary assistants in office at any one time. Thus, on any given day one person's duties are primarily that of a technician (assisting the doctor, restraining animals, cleaning cages, taking x-rays, setting IV catheters, prepping for surgery, performing lab work, etc.) while the other staff member performs more "clerical" work (answering the telephone, scheduling appointments, acting as receptionist and discharging animals after surgery, etc.).
